Theku Plaza, situated outside Newcastle, was looted and damaged during the July riots of 2021. It was a dark day in the retail world, but the intention was to ensure that we rebuilt an improved centre as fast as possible. This was our sixth project for McCormick Property Development. The Plaza opened successfully in January 2022 and 650 jobs were created in the community through employment at the Plaza.
The transformation of Plaza to Mall, the second phase of this project, was completed in October 2024. This has nearly doubled the size of the previous retail centre, giving the community of Osisweni in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal an upgraded retail experience.
