Located in Lapalala Wilderness Reserve, Limpopo, lies the prestigious and luxurious Melote Lodge. Curved buildings to be constructed and dropped onto a mountain may seem like a daunting task, especially dealing with four separate buildings that have to be precisely spaced to achieve the aesthetic appeal our client envisioned. When starting with earthwork exploration, we came upon enormous boulders, some literally the same size as the twenty-ton excavators undertaking the excavations! None the less, we stepped up and moved a mountain to obtain what was designed. Due to the scale, complexity, and access to the works, we purchased our first-ever mobile, all-terrain FIORI concrete mixer. This allows us to traverse the terrain with ease and ensures that we get the best results when casting the large-scale slab structures and to not increase our footprint. Doing remote work (what we like to call ‘bush jobs’) is what we do best. The challenge of transport and establishment is a source of pride. Occasionally accompanied by roaming lions, rhinos and the like, we had to ensure that strict protocols be put in place for the safety and security of our team and the wildlife in the reserve. We believe that the end result will be a true piece of art and will make its mark as one of South Africa’s most iconic and prestigious lodges that our client will certainly be proud of.
